Our visit from a vet doctor

Our current focus topic is "People in our Community who help us"...during our topic study we have been for a walk to the mechanics and had visits from a nurse and Matt who works for the New Zealand Fire Service. Yesterday we were lucky enough to get a visit from Estelle, Estelle is a vet doctor and she brought along her dog Stanley as a patient.

Estelle showed us her uniform and the protective gear that she wears when she is taking care of the animals that come to visit her. Estelle showed us how she gives the animals a check up when they come and see her and Stanley was such a good patient. Estelle checked his teeth, eyes, ears and heart. She showed us how to trim his nails and showed us how she would give stanley vaccines or medicine if he was sick.

We spoke about animal safety and how to approach a dog if we see one when we are out with our mums and dads.

Everyone had a turn of giving Stanley some treats and giving him a pat.

Thank you Estelle for your visit, we learnt so much, the Phoenix house children will be talking about this for weeks to come.

Middle More Nurse visits our kindy

At the moment children are learning about our community helpers. Related to this topic we are having some visitors at preschool to increase their knowledge about community helpers. Today we called a nurse from Middle More Hospital to develop kids' learning about Nurses as a community helper.  They learnt how they help community through their work, what they do in hospital and how they help sick people. It was very exciting when she came  to our preschool in her special uniform with a small watch and a name badge on it. She told us what she does in the hospital, how she treats sick people, what equipment she uses while treating sick people. She demonstrated to the children how she puts bandage and how she checks oxygen level in blood. Stethoscope was the main attraction as every body was trying to listen to their friend's or their own heart beat.  Kids were very excited and they were listening to the nurse very carefully and asking lots of questions as well as answering her questions.

Matt from the Fire Service comes to Visit!!

With our interest in community helpers we called upon the fire service to come along and introduce their "Get Out, Stay Out" preschool programme with our tamariki.  Matt from the fire department came in today and shared a special book and song to teach us all about what to do in a fire. Matt said if we practice our song everyday, we just might get a visit from the Howick Fire Department, how cool would that be!!

Hear the Smoke Alarm, beep beep beep
Get Out! Stay Out! Well done!
Fire in the house. Hot Hot Hot!
Get Out! Stay Out!  Well Done!
When you know there are flames. Fire Fire!
Get Out! Stay Out! Well Done!
See the fire engine. Safe outside
Get Out! Stay Out! Well Done!

Our Trip to Howick Auto!!

We are off to Howick Auto and are all pretty excited about what we might see on our adventure out today.  As we have been discussing people and jobs in the neighbourhood, what better place to visit.  Mechanics are very important in keeping our community safe by fixing and servicing our vehicles and making them safe for us to drive and travel in.  Thanks to Dion, Mishaela's dad we got the grand tour of the workshop and we saw close up just how important their job is and did you know girls can do it too!!  We were shown how to check a cars brakes, take the wheels off (using a special nifty tool), how to use the special machine to lift the cars up of the ground to check underneath them, how to take an engine out, we got to see some dirty bad oil that needed to be changed and got a good look up close under the bonnet of the car and at the machine that reads the cars computer.  How cool is that!!  It's not often you get an opportunity to see what happens at a mechanics workshop or have a go at using their tools, we were very lucky people.  Lucky indeed, when we said a big "Thank you" to Dion at the end of our visit, he gave us all a goody bag to take away.  Back at Kindy their was lots of talk about the trip and we noticed in the playground, children were playing out what they had just seen and learnt, our kindy vehicles were getting their first full service and lots of wheels were being changed!!  Now they are totally safe for us to drive in, thank you Phoenix House,  I think we may just have some mechanics in the making!!!  What an awesome trip and learning experience today to extend our learning on jobs in the community.
