Authentic Indian Food

Cottage Cheese Curry with Rice

Recently we have been focusing on baking and cooking in Phoenix house.  Related to this topic children are enjoying to cook and bake different things. Today we cooked authentic Indian food.  Children were so excited to see different utensils, cooking style and ingredients such as curry powder, cumin seeds, turmeric, red chilly powder, dry fenugreek leaves, and Indian cottage cheese as they do not usually see these at home.  It was all team work; children helped me in cooking by mixing and chopping. Everybody enjoyed curry and rice and asked for another serve. Wow !

Challenging our baking skills!!

Recently we have been focusing on baking and cooking in Phoenix house and throughout this topic the kids have really been enjoying making different things, learning new skills and getting to eat all the yummy things they make. J As part of the set up in our room there is a ‘Woman’s weekly cookbook’ on display and while feeling ambitious we told the children to have a flick through at mat time and pick a cake they thought would be pretty cool to make, the pirate ship cake was the winner.

We decided to tackle this challenge this week together.... and what an awesome job we did!!

Cup Cake Pro's!!

We had a special parent helper in today to teach us how to make delicious looking cupcakes! Maree (Adams Mum) who has a cupcake/cake business, was kind enough to take time out her busy schedule to come and show us how the pro’s decorate cupcakes! We had SOOO much fun learning how to make the perfect icing and how to ice our very own cupcake with the piping bag. The children (and teachers)loved learning a new skill that we can take home or show off in Phoenix House. Everyone had a great time picking what colour icing they would like then decorating our own cupcake with lots of yummy decorations such as Milo, sprinkles, chocolate chips and jelly beans. This was a really special experience as they children had helped to make the cupcakes previously and then got to use their imagination to create their very own cupcake. It was also super special for Adam to have his Mum come in and show his friends what she does at home.
